Hi Families,

Reminder: Friday, October 7th is a holiday for the kids.

Language Arts: We will enjoy a new story this week from our Houghton Mifflin Reading Series titled Pearl's First Prize Plant. The strategy focus we will be working on is predicting and inferring as well as working on summarizing the stories we read; beginning, middle end, problem, solution.

Phonics: We began our Total Reading Program and will learn a few more this week. Have fun finding these new phonograms in the stories that you and your children are reading.

Handwriting: We will continue learning how to write all of the capital letters and use the week to do lots of practice now that we know how to write the entire alphabet "the first grade way!"

Writing: We will continue our new school wide writing program, Writing Workshop, working on our narrative pieces. We are in the "picking a seed" phase for the coming week.

Grammar: We will work on finding the nouns in the sentences that we read and write.

Social Studies: We will continue to use our Studies Weekly and Scholastic News periodicals.  Also, being kind to others will be weaved into our daily lessons.

Math: We will work in Unit 2  Module 2 in our Bridges Math Program where students will focus on addition and subtraction strategies and emphasizes solving for an unknown. They will be learning about fact families and word with story problems.
