Dear Families,

Thank you so much for all the yummy treats and your help in making our Valentine's Day so very very special!!!!

Homework: Thank you to all the families who are using the Moby Max Math Program DAILY at home! We are seeing huge leaps in our students' math abilities! I stapled a new sign in card to your child's folder incase you misplaced the old one.

Classroom Needs: large and small Ziplock baggies, prize box items, gummy bears and jelly beans

Take Home Book Bag: Each day your child takes home a book at his level to read to you. Each day your child is responsible for putting away his book and getting a new one from our reading level baskets. Please look for it each day, listen to him read and then sign the Reading Log which should ALWAYS be in the Book Bag. If you child is reading a long story book and or a chapter book and needs another day or two to finish it, he may let me know and I will okay it. Each Friday, I will be collecting the Book Bags and checking in with each student's progress.

Phonograms: We have begun our learning about phonograms, two or three letters that when written together make one or more sounds. We have learned sh, th, ee, er, ch, ck, wh, ea, ai, ay, ar, ed, ow, ou, oo, or, oe. oa, igh, eight,  ir, ur, and ear so far.

Writer's Workshop: We are working on Informational Writing writing our own How To book. We discussed what we are experts in, gathered all our ideas, and have written our introduction.

Word Wall Words: We are finished! All 100 first grade word wall words are on our Word Wall. Please work with your child daily at home to read, write and spell these words.

Math: We are working in Unit 6 in our Bridges Program. In this unit your child will practice efficient math strategies to add and subtract within the range of 0-20, tell, write and solve a variety of addition and subtraction story problems, write equations to match the problems, use place value strategies to add and subtract up to 100 and measure, order and compare height in inches.

CGI: In an effort to increase rigor and incorporate more mathematical teaching strategies that will help reinforce the Standards of Mathematical Practice, I will begin teaching story problems using the CGI, Cognitive Guided Instruction, approach. This will help me learn how your child problem solves and also help me to guide and plan my instruction.

Spring Auction: hosted by RDMPA, is on March 10th from 4:00- 9:00. There will be a raffle, silent and live auction prizes.  It's a great way to to meet and greet other Rio families and staff members. It's also one of the ways Rio raises money for our school. It's a win-win event!  Our theme for our class basket is " A Drawing Basket". Dear Families,

It was SO FUN to perform at the monthly assembly today! It kicked off our 100 Day in grand style!
Only 80 more days of first grade....so hard to believe!

Valentine's Day: We will be celebrating Valentine's Day on Wednesday, February 14th from 11:15-12:20(Dismissal time). Our Room Moms are planning, organizing and running the stations. Here is a list of the students in our class if your child would like to be part of our Valentine Exchange. Please send in a shoe box or bag for your child to decorate to collect their Valentine's in by next Friday.

Star of the Week: We are enjoying our Star of the Week Program and LOVE learning about our first grade friends. The details of our program is listed on the right side of this blog entry. If you have any questions or need to make a change in the schedule, just let me know.
