Hello Families! Welcome to our Room 4 Weekly Blog! As I shared at Back to School Night, this is the place where you can find out what we are doing in Room 4. It is a also great resource for you as I have posted many links to help your children with their first grade skills. Remember, this is just a snap shot of what we are doing in class. For all the details, be sure to ask your child!

Here is a peek at our upcoming week...

REMINDER: MONDAY IS A HOLIDAY!

Language Arts: We will enjoy 3 great stories from our Houghton Mifflin Reading Series. The skills your child will be working on are capitalizing names, listening to compare and contrast events from a story, noting details in a story and finding words with the short O.

Writing: We will continue our handwriting program, Total Reading, which helps your child learn how to write "the first grade way" using the "magic C" and "straight line" letters. Watch for the paper to come home and have your children show you what they learned.

Grammar: We will start a focused look at our 5 vowels and and the rules that make them short or long when used in words. Ask you child to tell you about the "Bossy E" and what he does to vowels in words!

Social Studies: We will use our Studies Weekly periodical to learn about the American and California flags, the Pledge of Allegiance and the history of Labor Day. Being kind to others will be weaved into all the daily lessons.

Math: We will start in Module 3 of our Bridges Math Program where students will engage in "quick look" activities intended to help them subitize, or recognize the quantity of objects in a set without having to count each individually. Students also explore part-part-whole relationships with numbers to 20.

Library:  We visit the library every Thursday.  If your child brought home their book today, please be sure it comes back by next Wednesday.
