Dear Families,

I hope you all had fun at Movie Night!!! It's so much fun to get together with our Rio Friends!

Language Arts: Our Houghton Mifflin story is Jasper's Beanstalk. This is an entertaining fiction story about a cat who plants a bean!  From this story we will learn to summarize so please practice this reading strategy at home too.

Grammar: We will begin learning about action words (verbs) finding them in the sentences we read and write.

Phonics: We will look at short U words and word families with short U sounds....bug, rug, etc.

Writing: We will continue to write each day to our Mystery Person and learning how to edit our own writing using COPS.

Writer's Workshop: We have worked through the first two stages in this writing program, Gathering and Picking a Seed. We will begin next week to write our stories starting with the BIG THING THAT HAPPENED.

Word Wall Words: Your children will learn 5 new word wall words each week and together we will put them on our Word Wall. Listed below are the word wall words from Kindergarten and the 5 new ones. It is my hope that you will make a word wall at home or make flashcards to practice daily with your child. This will help your child with reading, writing, and spelling.

Mystery Person: Each day we will have fun discovering who is going to be the Mystery Person. This engaging activity helps students learn about their new classmates as well as practice reading, writing and spelling. Look for your child's Mystery Person book to come home!

Math: Our focus this week will continue to be using our math strategies with addition, finding missing addends and using our strategies to see if equations are equal or not.

Lexia Reading Core 5 Program: It is very helpful for you child to work in this program each day at home. This is a self directed program that helps your child with reading and spelling skills. Your child will need a head set to listen to the directions and complete it without any help as they do here at school. I receive a report as to the progress the children are making at with the program at home. I highly recommend it! To access it follow these 4 steps..

1. google lexia core 5
2 go to...
www.lexialearning.com/products/core5
3. go to "sign in" at the top right
4  scroll down to Core5
5 put in my email lea_robinson@pvusd.net (if needed)
4. your child will type in his/her username and password from the card provided
